SATA or IDE

I have just bought a Seagate 80GB SATA 2.5 inch hard drive to use as an external drive for my laptop. Didnt realise there is a difference between SATA and IDE!
I want to but a caddy for it. Is this possible and is this drive useable as an external for my laptop?
Please help.
 
I'm just curious, but if it's an external drive why did you buy a 2.5" instead of the much cheaper 3.5"?
