SATA or PATA

buying a hard drive. but can't decide to choose SATA drive or PATA drive. SATA drives cost a little more than PATA drives do, but SATA is much much faster than a PATA drive? And I also heard that SATA isn't really faster than PATA drives, and SATA drives are unreliable and easier to get errors?

SATA is a new technology.But in performance tests it is not much faster than PATA.And the performance difference between SATA and PATA is not worth for buying SATA.Summary= PATA is better...

So what happens if ive got two optical drives and a HDD already? For performance it'd be silly to get a PATA drive if the price delta is <$10
 
And if we dont have a harddisk,and we will buy a new one....And dont forget every mainboard has 4 IDE Ports

Bingo ... but you do realize if we have 2HDD and 2Optical (as i specifically setup the question) there's gonna be bottlenecking right?
 
most mobo only 2 ide ports up to 4 ide devices even some have only one ide ports. i'd go with SATA because is faster and i dont wanna have 2 ide cables going all over the place.

Which is what i nailed early on with my comment about having 2 CDs and a HDD ... by sharing the next HDD you bottleneck it :)
 
i've had problems with sata hard drives, but they do tend to run a bit faster, in terms of access times. You also cant get a 10K RPM IDE hard drive.
 
It's possible but the common conception is that you need SATA/SCSI to make good use of a 10k RPM drive.
