SATA & SATA II | Backwawrd compatible?

Im building a new comp, and i have a question.

My new mobo is compatible with SATA II. If I use my old SATA hardrives with my new motherboard, will SATA II be enabled?
 
OK so SATA I / SATA II doesnt depend on the HDD itself, but the mobo its connected to...

Well, the HDD has a part in it too but you can mix and match them with no harmful effects. You wont have 3Gbps peak transfer rates unless both components are capable of pushing that much data. Realistically, you aren't going to use the full 1.5Gbps even with Raptors.
 
So are you trying to say that SATA - II is a marketing scam?

Sort of. You can't touch the max transfer speed of the specification but there's a bit more to SATA II than just the transfer speed.

If you wanted to get 3Gbps off a single drive you'd need such a fast spindle speed the drive would have a very small capacity. You can do it with RAID arrays but that's across multiple drives and so you have even more bandwidth available.

I've come to the conclusion that I dont need to buy a new HDD... Ill just use my 2 120GB's in a RAID 0 config.

BTW, Whats the max bandwidth you can achieve with RAID 0 ?

Will 3.0Gbps be achievable with 2 or 3 drives in RAID 0? I plan to use 2 x 120GB's now and chuck another one in when I need it...
