Saving files to partition

Hello everyone, glad to be a part of the community. I have a couple questions about saving files to a partition. My laptop came with 2 hard drives, or so it says.

How can I tell if I have 2 physical HDs or just 1 thats been partitioned?

If I save something to a partition separate from the one my OS is on could a virus, malware, or even spyware access my main HD or affect the OS?

^Same question but applied to a removable storage device.

Is a partition the same as a virtual HD? What benefits does one have over the other (if that requires too much detail, don't worry about it)?

If it is a Windows Computer, then look in Disk Management. If you have Two Disks, they will be labeled something like Disk 0, and Disk 1.

The easiest way to use a second Data storage Partition is to move the My Documents Folders to it. If you don't know how just Google it. Directions are posted all over the internet.

Ok I do have 2 physical HDs which is nice. But I'm still worried if I download something (potentially malicious) and save it to the secondary hd it will infect my whole computer. I know how to transfer files between hds, and I know all about virus scanning software (altho I'm always open to suggestions).

would not worry about then. likely too late if ya ran it and saved to a partition or another drive in the first place. You have to try and download from a reliable source. that's your job. also a reliable anti-virus program. that's the best ya can do.

I just got Avast! and it says it does real time scans, is this enough to stop a bad install? I'm affraid once the files on my computer its there and causing trouble.

If you are worried about the programs you download, then scan it before it running it. Use your antivirus software and a good malware scanner such as malwarebytes or superantispyware.

You will see in Avast that you can schedule scans. The Quick Scan is the most useful in "Scan Computer" because it scans the most important files (those that can be infected). Schedules are set by pressing the "Settings" button for the selected scan type. You can manually start any of the scans if you feel particularly paranoid! To scan a downloaded file or folder, select, right-click on it and click "Scan......" next to the orange ball icon.
