SB x-fi sound card digital??

I have the SB X-FI card and this car has digital optical outputs on it.

I took my optical cable and connected the sound card to my logitech z-5500 speakers, and i went into vista's control panal and enabled spdif output to be default.

HOWEVER, everything comes out in 'stereo' mode on my speakers....Now I have the speakers themselves in optical mode but it displays EFFECT: STEREO on them!

games, DVDS, music, EVERYTHING! .....except when i do a 'test' in vista for digital....then it displays digital sound??

I am so confused and think i am just missing something basic?

ALSO....my Sound Blaster control panel thinks i only have two speakers hooked up...but i have 5.1???

PLEASE HELP!

Go into the Creative audio control panel under the Start Menu, click on speakers and make sure it's set to 5.1 and not 2/2.1 or headphones. Also try setting the Encoder to Dolby Digital Live or DTS Connect and see if that enables 5.1 for you.

In the Creative control panel, click on the "Encoder" tab. As for the 2.1 issue, I seem to recall having this issue before where it would only switch to 5.1 when I watched a movie or played a game that supports 5.1, which may be why you only see it during a sound test. When you watch a DVD does it switch to 5.1 mode?

well i cant find the encoder tab...but when i do a speaker test in vista...its in Dolby digital surround....but when i do a speaker check in Creative...it is in stereo and the rear speaker 'test' noice comes out of the front speakers! its like it doesnt even know i have rear speakers!
