scan programs? anti-virus?

One of my dads friends who is good with computers is always scanning his computer with something. Some program and i cant remember to ask him what it is.
He also told me about a really good anti virus that was free but idr that either...
Anyone who knows of a good anti virus or a program that like scans and check your computer please tell me the names.

Only if you computer has them, or you store lots of cracks or something

what about the scan thing it just like scans the eniter comp and checks for errors.

All antivirus software has a manual scan function.... what you may find with some of the free ones is that they don't offer real time scanning in the background.

I've had Avast popup on a found virus once, just sitting there (my server).
