Scanner not working properly

Hey guys!
My printer, an all-in-one HP Officejet J5780, has problems scanning; I can't get it to scan from the printer itself. I have to open HP Solution Center and initiate scanning from there.

If I try to start scanning from the printer, I get no error messages, only the printer's power button starts blinking and the LCD screen says "Starting scan..." but then after 30 seconds or so, just reverts to the default display, i.e. date and time. Power button stops blinking too.
 
i was asking because with vista ms screwed around with the way imaging was handled, and removed fax etc... from the home editions. Somethimes this breaks prnter drivers, but tnats now been ruled out, seeing as you run xp.
