School decision and major?

Im currently 17 years old and a junior in high school. I planned on becoming a game programmer but lost hope after seeing people younger then me write programs by themselves. I felt like it was a late start for me to jump right into a school with no knowledge of it so i turned my attention to computer science. So recently I decided to start finding options for schools but couldnt find a good place to ask qeustions until i found this forum. Anyways i figured there has to be some people here that went to college for computer science so i wanted to ask a few qeustions and maybe get some help on what i should do to start.

1. If you went to college for computer science how was it? Hard? Easy? Time consuming? Did you have any knowlege of computer science before going into college or school.

2. If you did have prior knowledge were did you learn it from?

3. When did you start?

4. How did you find your school?

5. If you got a job out of college was it hard to find/get?\

6. What can a person do with a computer science degree? (like what jobs)

And any other help you want to include would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
 
Renssalaer has a program for developing games. They also have other computer sci majors that could be of interest. It may be worth a look.

Don't loose heart about becoming a game programmer just because someone else (regardless of age) has done something or knows something you don't. You will always run into somebody who is better than you at something. Better yet, try to surround yourself with those people and you will gain more from their experience and knowledge. It is never too late to begin a quest for knowledge.

By the way, many people get overwhelmed by entry-level game programming at a larger company. It is not really an easy, glamorous job. It is very hard work. Why not take up game programming as a side hobby while you go through your CS degree? Have fun developing your own games in your spare time. :)
 
I went to art school, never took a formal college computer class in my life and I am now a Unix/OS X system admin by trade, and before I did that I did Windows/Novell and before that I was a warranty repair technician.

Experience > education, you just need to get your foot in the door and work hard and build your skills over time. Don't be afraid either to put in your entry level time. I have worked with college grad computer people who think they know it all because of their degree, well they can't possibly teach you everything in school.

keep that in mind and above all do something you are interested in, because in the end you are either happy or miserable.
 
my only advice is to get as specific a degree as possible. computer science graduates are a dime a dozen and they really aren't very marketable when time comes to apply for a job.
