Screen broken, can't get files

The other day my little brother decided to 'play' with my laptop. This resulted in the LCD screen being broken, so now all i can see is a tiny portion of the display in the top right corner. I have files on it that i need to get, but can't as the bit that isnt broken is not big enough for me to even log on, let alone navigate my documents and transfer them onto my memory stick.

I have tried plugging the big cable with the blue end from my desktop's screen into the back of my laptop, and this works fine up to a point where the desktop screen turns off and i still can't see anything.

First of all, can anyone think of a reason why the laptop isnt showing up on the desktop screen when i've plugged the big cable with the blue end into my laptop, and if not, is there any way to see what's happening on my laptop so i can retrieve my files.

Your laptop isn't displaying through your desktop screen because it isn't configured to. You need to change the settings for it to display through external screens. As for retrieving your files, you could always physically remove the hard drive from your laptop and plug it into a desktop computer (probably need an adapter) and offload the files that way.

Look at the owners manual or the keyboard for the button to push to turn on ext. monitor.
My laptop has the button labeled.

Thank you for your reply

I'm assuming to configure my laptop to display through external screens is something I need to do from my laptop, leaving it out of the question?

As for removing the hard drive and plugging it in, if I were to pop down to PC World would they be able to set me up with the necessary cables?

as far as i can see there is no ext moniter button, and my brother has all the manuals and stuff, and is currently noit home

remove the hard drive out and hook up with a (IDE or Sata to USB) adapter. then you can get those files with another computer.
