Screen is black

My Panasonic Let's Note CF-W5 laptop is about 3 years old. Very recently, the screen went near completely black on me. I can barely -- but just -- see the icons. For the past couple of weeks, I noticed some flickering happening on occasion. Today, while using it, the screen went dark. Then, after re-booting, it came back moentarily and went black again. Now, it is just black everytime I re-boot.

I have a limited warranty remaining. The exact same thing happened to my Toshiba laptop a couple of years ago and I use it connected to a monitor as a desktop.

What is the problem and is this going to be an expensive repair job? Depending on the estimate, may I need a new laptop?

We spoke to the Panasonic service center today. They told us that my black screen could be either (1) an LCG problem (which would be over $700 to repair) or (2) the inverter board (around $250-$350 to repair).

As I type this message, my screen is fine. It keeps going out on me every time I use it. Any ideas what it could be? I could get it checked here but if the problem is not worth fixing, just getting it checked will run me a few bucks.

My 3-year warranty expired last month...

If you want to get it done cheap, find a cheaper place than the panasonic store. try local stores for tv screen, LCD repairs etc.

Another thing to check: When you close the lid of your laptop, it clips in correct? often, the clip pushes a little button that turns off the backlight, and once released turns the light on again. this little button can become stuck or faulty (example if something was spilt on it)

My dads laptop has this feature. when the lid is closed (or you use your finger to push the little button) the backlight goes off.
