Screen problem

I currently have a Toshiba laptop, which is about 5 years old. The only problem is that sometimes the screen turns to black and turns off for no reason at all. Does anyone know why it is doing this and what I can do to prevent it happening again?

Thanks in advance

Now when you said the screen is turning off, I take it that it's not due to going into screensaver or powering off from non usage, right? It could mean that it's going out on you from old age. Could be a connection problem- maybe the connector to the motherboard or the wires cracking from all the lifting and opening. It's a common thing for laptops of that age.

which toshiba? certain toshiba laptop has this switch inside the screen that automatically turns it off and will not turn on until a restart or something similar.

can you turn it back on when you type or move the mouse cursor? or does it not turn on completely?

if it turns on if you move the mouse,
right click on the desktop>properties>screen saver
see if it is turned on, if so, turn it off, then on the screen saver dialog, click on "power"
then on the bottom, you should see where it says "turn off monitor" and it will given a certain amount of time, same for hdd, and standby, you can turn off monitor and standby if you would like it to not black out.
