Screen size

I have a problem. I have a software that need to run on a resolution of 1280X1024. So I have to run it on a 17" flat screen, since no 14" or 15" flat screen can run in such a high resolution (other than laptops). Is there anyway to get the 17" flat screen to run in 1280x1024 resoluton but to have the size of the sceen not to fill more that a 15" monitor? The reason I need this, is due to that the software I am running have occiloscope grid. that are to big in cm on a 17" flat screen.

You may want to try keeping your screen resolution as it is, but resizing your window so it is the size that you need.
 
I can not resize the software. it will always run in full screen. but maybe I can use the monitors picture scale to do it.
