Hey guys, i have the HDD as labeled in the the header, i am having a problem when booting sometimes.

sometimes it just wont boot, it comes up with an error in DOS saying "boot device not detected" or something like that (cant remember exactly)... (ill post more details when it happens again).

i was just wondering, could this be down to HDD failure or something else?

i need to get this sorted ASAP as i am heading back to Uni at the weekend and i need to be able to use my PC.

thanks

Sometimes it will, sometimes it won't! That sounds more like a flaky data cable to replace first.

A dvd burner that doesn't see dvd-rws but sees all dvd-rs? Then it will be fussy about when you can boot from a disk like the Vista dvd or a live distro? Remove the cable included with the board and toss one in that was bought as a separate item and waa laa...! the drive works better then before.

That was seen here with an optical drive that worked and then didn't fully. A bad cable seeing the same problem there would suddenly no longer have the bios seeing a hard drive but only the one or more optical drives installed ending with the error message appearing. A cable is the low cost item and having a few spare around nevet hurts.

Otherwise if the drive is going on you by that description it wouldn't last long. But that also isn't the typical problem seen when a drive fails. It either make a lot of noise or simply quits without warning. A flaky cable on the other hand will obviously throw off the boot order causing the boot device not detected error to come up.
