Hi all i have a seagate 500gb ex hdd which i am in need of assistance with.
Basically the power supply died one day and after trying several different replacements which are hard to come by considering the input/output requirements.
After pulling the actual drive from the case i was told by several people that i needed an esata cable to get the stored files off the drive and onto my desktop pc.
I looked at the back of the drive and it has sockets which there is no way of attaching the plug to it.
to me it looks like i need a plug which has 15 pins sticking out of it as the ones which are enclosed will not fit.
Even the sticker which shows the sata power/data/jumper block does not match what the connections look like.
Basically i need to no what plugs/cables i need to transfer the files off this nightmare of a hdd.
I admit that when it comes to computers i am not the sharpest tool in the shed and i hope what i have written is easily understood.
Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated:D

Hi heavybarrell,

Looks like it has a SATA cable according to the Seagate site.

If I were you, I'd buy one of these: USB 2.0 to IDE/SATA Cable Adapter.
The Hi-Speed USB 2.0 to Serial ATA (SATA) or IDE 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch Drive Adapter creates a bridge between one USB 1.1/2.0 port and one Serial ATA or SATA-based mass storage device port. The USB 2.0 to SATA and IDE 2.5"/3.5" Drive Adapter turns any SATA or IDE hard drive into a convenient external drive. Easily transfer files from computer or notebook, back up files, or store large file archives on hard drives. The Hi-Speed USB 2.0 interface provides for easy installation with its Plug and Play design. The adapter supports all existing Serial ATA SATA and IDE drives 2.5" or 3.5"

Then you can use it as an external drive.

I bought something similar when my lappy HD fried. Very happy w/ my 100GB portable drive. :D

Not bad for $20 IMHO. :good:

Hope that helps!

Thank you for your help with Dean.
I have looked at the link you posted and none of the plugs/cables in that picture will fit.
The hdd is powered via a power pack and not via usb which is the main issue.
The sockets on the back of the hdd look as though only a plug with pins sticking out will slot into them.
i have alreay purchased an Esata cable pack which again the cables would not fit.
attempted to add a pic of the plug sockets but ran into issues.

Hey heavybarrel...

According to the Seagate site, the Barracuda 7200.11
ST3500820AS takes a SATA connection, not an eSATA connection.

The kit in the link I posted has a power converter for SATA/IDE drives - the little 4 pin connector. Look closely at the bottom right of the second picture: http://www.tigerdirect.com/include/...dpNo=2329300&csid=ITD&Sku=M501-1220&imgcart=1

I assure you, this kit will work for the Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 ST3500820AS. :D :D :D

Edit: As far as I can tell anyway - can I get someone else to verify? Just so I know I'm not crazy!?

I will add some pics after charging the camera to try and shed some more light on this issue because there is nowhere for a 4 pin plug to plug into there is a 2 pin slot next to where the sata cable should be.
I have looked at hundreds of different sata/esata/data cables and none that i have seen will fit the socket.
I will add these pics tonight.
Thanks again

I have added a photo of the connections to give you a better idea.
On the right side is the connection where the power supply connects to and also the mini usb slot.
Pic is a little blurry can take more if needed.
From the left is as follows: 2 pin socket, 15pin socket, 7 pin socket

Hey heavybarrell,

Are you sure that's a ST3500820AS?

The product number you wrote in your first post matches up with a ST3500820AS, but that picture looks like a laptop harddrive to me. What did you pull it out of? Look at the writing on top and post back. Where did you get that product number?

A ST3500820AS has a SATA connection. That's got to be a different model drive. I've never seen a connection like the one in the pic. Weird.

I'm going to start another post with that image to identify the connection!

The details i posted were off the white sticker on top of the hdd.
I removed the hdd from its case which is a seagate 500gb external hdd. External HDD was purchased from jb hifi
The problem i have found is that because it is powered by a power supply and not usb seems to make it more difficult to sort out.
I added a pic of the white sticker on top of the hdd but it hasnt come out in this post.
I will try again.

Cant add pic as it is telling me i have exceeded my quota.
