second harddrive help

Just built a new computer and have two new 640 gb sata harddrives installed. I put one in at first and installed xp on to it. I have now placed the second one in and it was picked up. I have gone into disk management and it lists the second harddrive so i clicked on it and initialized it. I want it to appear as a second harddrive so would i need to create a partition on it and use all the space to have this happen?

Are you partitioning the drive or are you formatting it? If you format the whole thing I don't believe it would matter seeing as your primary is the one with the OS on it.

well i currently have the first one showing up as c with windows xp on it. I have initialized the second one and it is showing up in disk management but not on my computer. I want to get it to show up as another drive letter next to the first one eg c drive with the xp on it and e drive as second harddrive. It doesn't give option in disk managemanet to format it only create partition.

You should be able to format it. Maybe you need to select your partition size and then format it. Make sure you don't select your OS drive though!
