Secondary Monitor on Laptop

I have got a laptop and wanted to use a TV as a secondary monitor.
I bought a VGA to RGB cable, then got a RGB to Scart adaptor for the back of my TV.
Had a mess about with the settings and still could see anything!
Does anybody know if this is possible? If so, how?

Look around in your settings and see of there is an option to force video output as your laptop probably isn't recognizing that your TV is connected to it.
