Secure Files On A LAN.

Assuming you're running Windows XP/Vista, then for starters you can disable file and print sharing. And if you want only certain folders to be viewed over the LAN, you can manually share certain files and folders simply by right clicking on them and going to the sharing properties page.
 
And if you suspect suspicious activity, as there are loopholes in Windows File Sharing options, use AxCrypt to encrypt and pswrd protect your highly personal files.
