Security Central?

Any one heard of Security Central? It's telling me I've got the W32 Blaster Worm and when I try to run AVG it won't start.

I've also tried other programmes like Symantec but they won't run either.

Any advice as to how to get rid of this very welcome.

And what is Security Central?

Security Central is a fake/bogus program that has infected your computer. Most likely you don't have the worm it's reporting but you will have an infection.
You need to go here http://www.computerforum.com/131398-important-please-read-before-posting.html and download Malwarebytes, run it and allow it to remove the infections, then post a Hijackthis log.

Every time I try to run a antivirus software it prevents it from so doing. I have the full AVG antivirus which didn't stop it which is a bit annoying!

I've tried malwarebytes but as I say it won't let it start so what now folks?

Thanks for your response by the way.

Download and Run ComboFix
If you already have Combofix, please delete this copy and download it again as it's being updated regularly.
  • Download this file here :

    http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe

When saving the file, save it as cleanme not combofix, that way whatever you are infected with won't stop the program from running.

  • Then double click cleanme.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

In your next reply please post:
  • The ComboFix log
  • A fresh HiJackThis log
  • An update on how your computer is running

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.

Last night I downloaded a small fix that disabled Security Central and then I ran Malywarebytes which has disposed of the infection as far as I can tell.

Why wouldn't AVG (full version) have stopped this attack? Is AVG not that good or was I just unlucky do you think?

Cheers.

I highly doubt you are clean of infections, I still recommend downloading and running combofix. Usually when you get infected and it doesn't allow you to run certain programs there is usually hidden infections.

Hi, john

In which case I'll take your advice, thanks.

Cheers. :)

Hi, johnb35

Tried to do as you suggested last night but can't disable AVG (don't know how!!) nor will it allow itself to be removed in Add/Remove programmes something to do with a microsoft file it cant delete?

Any ideas as to how to overcome this please so that I can run Combofix?

Cheers. :)

So is AVG still installed? You can run combofix with AVG enabled. If you really want to disable it, all you do is go into the advanced options and disable resident shield.

Open AVG, click on tools menu, then click on advanced settings, click on resident shield on the left and then uncheck "enable resident shield". Make sure you go back and enable it after the scan.

Thanks johnb,

Done as described about to run combofix

Thanks.

Hi. johnb35

I have run Combofix and Malwarebytes and nothing more discovered.

Thank you for invaluable advice, much appreciated.

Cheers. :)

Can you post the combofix log please? As said there could be hidden infections that combofix can't detect and automatically remove.
