im very new to this and a friend is helping when he can.
have a fresh build,
asus m5a97 board
phenom II x4 3.4 ghz processor
corsair 4x2 ram
radeon 6770 card

installed windows 7 everything is running great, can use for hours until left idle for about 15 min then goes to black screen asking for reboot or select boot device, restart gets the same screen, turn computer completely off then back on and boots fine. thought maybe it was a power issue with my no name 500watt psu so i threw in a very low end video card and still getting the same thing. new power supply on the way. did my windows install get corrupted or anything else i should try for the time being?

Most likely a flakey hard drive or loose connections to it. Start there. What brand of hard drive is it? You should download the drive makers disk diagnostic software to check it for errors.

reconnected all wires everything is good, windows is on a WD120gb. storage is on a separate 1TB drive, might have to go back to using just this if its toasted, is it any better to partition my tb drive or is it more of a convenience thing. will have to do more extensive testing n such when hes around as im completely lost with this stuff

and only does this when left alone. if im using it, i can run it all day with no problems

I would say the 120 is an older drive. Take it out of the equation and remove it from the system. Make a partition on the other drive for Windows and use the balance for your data.
