I have a network set up using mostly workgroups (sept one computer it hooked up to it threw a domain, since its the only computer using XP pro over home edition and the other computers are behind locked doors, and still need a password to get onto the server, so it dosnt really matter). i have a folder in the server set to shair and gave everyone full rights, but when some1 trys to get into it it says they dont have the rights to use it. WTF? And if im on the wrong track, what i want to happen is that everyone in the building can click on an icon on there desktop (simply a shortcut to the locations, not a big deal) and when they click on it the little box pops up that says to put in a username and password and then after they provide a correct set it takes them to a page (a folder or drive on the server) and all data on there is shared, but they dont have access to each other's computers. how is this done?

I can't quite understand all of what you just said,... but... when setting up a share like that, you should add the specific user account to the permissions in the folder itself (not just AD).

To do the shortcut thing, just have them connect to the folder and map a network drive... then they can just drag the drive to the desktop.

right, thank you, i had tryed sharing the folder over and over again, but it just decided to work the last time i tryed it.

If you could be a little more clear it would help. The users that can not connect are they domain users or workgroup ?
only authenticated domain users can connect to a share on the domain.

i got it to work, sorry my last post wasnt very clear on that, i was kinda in a hurry. I have several computers connected in a workgroup and 1 connected with a domain (i know thats an odd way to do it and will prolly lead to confusion later, but several of the computers have XP home, witch, to my knowledge, u can get onto a domain). But it is all working fine now, i figured it out at work today. Thanks for helping
