Server 2008 R2 SP1 questions

okay. I got a copy of Server 2008 R2 SP1 Enterprise, and of coarse have questions.
First, my wireless card (Atheros AR9285) driver from 7 isn't working (ethernet is, so not a big deal). Is there a 2008 R2 specific driver to this card, or is wireless a lost cause at this point?

2nd. How would I go about setting it up as a FTP server, that I could use to get files from at any internet connected computer?

For setting up the FTP server, it would be better if you have a static IP address. Here is a guide - http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc771012(WS.10).aspx This guide uses IIS.
You can also use WAMP or XAMP. BTW if you need a guide on WAMP, I have a few good ones.
But basically it is pretty easy to set it up you won't need a guide for WAMP.

As for the WLAN card I checked and it is only compatible with Windows XP and Vista.
You can try running the setup in compatibility mode or you can also try the device manager and let it search for the drivers.

Hope that helps.

The wireless card is actually 7 compatible. I have had it under 7 before. HP supplied the drivers for it from the factory with 7 installed.

and thanks for the info on FTP.

Just a theoretical question now. would it be possible o host myself a domain with this, or would that be too difficult?

It won't be difficult to host a domain if you have a static ip connection, and given that your ISP hasn't done something weird(Don't know whether an ISP can do that or not).

As for Windows Sever 2008 did you try the device manager?
And most of the hardware which is compatible with Windows vista is also compatible with Vista.
And also did you try running it in compatibility mode.
Just right click the drivers(Download from their website) and then go to properties and then go to the compatibility tab and then check run in compatibility mode and then select windows xp or vista whichever is available. And then try running the setup.

its in compatibility mode for vista, and still not working. I may have a bad card here, ill have to do some more testing on that. (I havent used this computer for ~3 months, so I dont quite remember if the card was functioning when I put it up)

Edit:
apparently you have to enable wireless lan under administration in order to use it. Der, I think ive made a fool of myself something good here.

Good :D

So for an FTP server its better you do not use a domain, since no one else would be using it.
If you have a static ip just remember it and use it to access your files.

And do remember to port forward on your Router CP.
