so my budy wants me to build him a server, i told him i have no idea how but hes pretty insistant. can someone show me to a good server building 101 crash course or something.

Before you begin to build a server, you need to figure out the following:

1) what is the server for?

2) what services will the server be running?

3) how many users will connect to the server?

4) Do you have enough resources to make the server run well?

5) what platform do you want the server to run?

6) Does it need to be rack mounted?

he wants the server for a small buisness he runs, only abou 10 computers will be connecting to it, im not sure but i think he wants the server for ease of communication between stations and mass storage, as for the rest i dont know.

Better figure it out, if he doesn't want to manage them via group policy (which would be over kill for 10 clients) or push out apps and settings, then you don't need to use a Windows Server OS, which will save you about $1000.

You need to find out exactly what they want to do. Also, make sure you charge for your time as well.

i called him after my last post, he said that he doesnt care about anything other than getting all of his computers on the same page and setting up a good network while also being able to moniter and controll the internet usage. and there are 12 computers that will be on the network.

Uh, OK, this is what I would look at....

1 Server running Linux/Unix with Samba file sharing (assuming these are windows boxes for clients), also running a Squid proxy for Internet usage.

Unless he wants group policy and to be able to manage the machine then you gotta go with Win Server and Active Directory.

I would also run some firewalls and spam filters on a box on the network, probably the same box that runs the proxy.

um ive never designed, built, or shopped for a server before is it basically the same as doing a rig or is there a difference i should know about.
