Server or no server...

Hello all,

I'm trying to build a machine that will be on 24/7 that will hold all my movies/music... probably a raid 10 setup...but my question is...

Do i need to build a server? or a regular computer with a raid10 setup will work.

Are there benefits on using server mobo/cpu or can i just use regular i7 core (sandy bridge) and mobo to fit.

Ram probably going to use 12 gigs...

i'm looking for around 5-10 TB of storage.

I ran some game servers of an old normal pc 24/7 for over a year and it was fine, having said that you best wait for someone who knows more than me to reply :)
 
for home file serving/sharing, you don't need an i7 & 12GB ram! just take a look at the file sharing server in my sig :D
it's chugging along just fine with 3 sata drives, 2 pata drives & an external usb drive.
running windows xp, i've never seen it use more than 300 or 400 MB ram, that's while scanning for virus.

for a more updated system, you will need a mobo with as many sata ports as you can find or get some expansion cards that supports whatever raid you need. also a large case with good cooling or you can use external enclosures with an esata card.

you might also consider investing in a gigabit network, most new systems should have it, just make sure you also get a compatible router.

i also have a 850va ups on it, currently at 24% capacity.

well i have an old pentium 4 2.4 gighertz laying around so i guess i'll just upgrade the ram to 2gigs+ and throw in win7(??)

The Mobo has a built in video card ... do i need to get a raid controller to do raid50...(6 hard drives right?) ( Sorry never done raiding before lol except in wow...lolz)

I will be installing this server in my desk ... basically i have a wall of fans on two sides of my desk and it will be covered by a large piece of glass. so yo ucan see all the parts inside :) should look sweet... just not sure how to mount it yet... maybe i'll just drill into the ply wood and put the screws from an old case... the only wire that will be coming out of this is the power and a spare monitor cable.... :D
 
well, how much ram is in it now? old memory can be expensive, but 2 gigs should be ok.

you can get a raid card from newegg, most come with 4 sata ports.
also, for true hardware raid, they are more expensive.

i'm using the PROMISE SATA300 TX4, $70 at newegg.

i'm not doing raid, so i can't comment on that, but i think it's only software raid.

there are some cards go up to about $600 or more
 
well i'm trying to do raid10 (raid 50 mentioned earlier but i think its overkill) i purchase a lot of music/movies from itunes... and recently i lost some movies on my old pc due to the death of my hard drive.... so i wanted something with redundancy liked raid 10/50 (what i understand from reading) something that has the performance to stream via network or internet (windows home server)

from what i read raid 5/6 is a bit slow on writing on disks. and 10/50 have better performance. Can someone suggest a good raid card that can handle raids10/50 and a link on how to set that up lol because i have noooooo clue

and does anyone know where i can find a website (such as newegg) that i can just purchase hotswap bays? i'm gonna make my own case :)
