I have a Computer(Which I'm Eventually not going to use anymore) and a router. What other supplies do I need to start a server for backing up files, etc.?

Network Cables.

If you wish to turn that comptuer into a Dedicated Gaming Server like i have, It is a very good option

Also, If you wish to start learning about features such as DHCP, Network Mapping, Print servers (all Basics) I would suggest Getting a copy of Windows Server 2003.

Xp will be fine for a Gaming Server, But Xp Will not allow DHCP.

DHCP is when you plug a computer into the router, the server will automatically give that computer an IP Adress within the Specified Scope.

I just turned my old machine into a webhost and soon to be game server... Forward ports and stuff, it's real simple

Windows 2003 server is unnecessary for a small home server. A program like tftpd32 acts as a tftp, ftp, PXE and DHCP server. It is freeware.

I decided I'm going to use Ubuntu Linux Server Edition. It is Free! Now, What else do you I need to buy besides network cables? Also, Where in my house should I set it up at?

No. What is that? Sorry, I'm really new to servers:D Also, The server I'm planning to use is the one down below in my sig. The Gateway.

a patch panel. a place that all your home cat wires join into (only if you have wired in your home) if not go wireless.

My router is wireless. But, My big question is. How do I set the whole thing up? Would I plug the server into my router?

OK. Can I back files up from my computers? How do you do that? I will try setting it up one of these days. But, It is good to know!

ok... if you want to serve. i just installed windows home server and i love it. it comes with software you put on the client and it will back up for you. i would go with that if your new to linux just because it can be hard and you it is hard to automatically... but if you want to stick with linux. you need to setup a samba server (i thnk ubunto has it)

I have been using Linux since November 2006. I probably won't have any problems. But, Then again if this is a server edition it maybe a little harder. Let's say I'm on one of my computers running Windows XP and I wan't to save a file to my server's internal hard drive. How would I do that?

you setup a samba on the server and on the windows vreat a network folder that is linked to yourserver so like \\server\brianmay27 and just drag and drop
