Just reinstalled my windows XP pro and tried to download the Service Pack 2 and microsoft is claiming that my Serial Number is not legit or something....i bought the CD like 2 years ago...so i don't know if someone got a hold of my S/N or what....any way to get around this or circumvent the system....i really dont feel like emailing back and forth with microsoft and trying to prove to them that i am the original owner of the Windows XP Cd.....

any help or ideas would be much appreciated

If your copy of Windows isn't activated you can't download anything from MS. After calling MS by phone to clear that up you then have to watch the new validation tool verify your cop of Windows and pass in order to then seen all updates available. The only other seen outside of Microsoft with the redistributable form of SP2 is at http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/OS-Enhancements/Windows-XP-SP2-RTM.shtml

That will also fail to install if XP isn't activated. You must have bought an older copy of XP with SP1 since SP2 was released in November 2004.

That happened to me and i got told that it was a error in the installation so i re-formated and worked fine

the problem is that i JUST FORMATTED and did a clean install...my copy of XP is old...doesnt even come with service pack 1...any where i could even get copy of SP1 without having to authenticate?

Again try calling them and see what they say. If you have the original activation key they should be able to verify it.

Where did you buy that copy of XP from.. used at EBay? Stores and online vendors pulled the service pack less copies from shelves after they stocked copies with SP1 and later SP2. In 2005 some back room inventory would see that if not used.

The main problem there of course still has to do with seeing XP activated or simply buying a new copy with SP2 included. At least then if you have to reinstall XP at some point you won't have the hassles you are seeing now.
