I reformatted my computer about a week ago and still have service pack 1 installed. Since i only have service pack 1, many programs can't be installed. Also, i am unable to watch movies with power dvd or vlc media player.

The first few days windows update found a lot of updates in which i installed, but now, it doesnt run. So i went to Microsoft's website and provided a link to install service pack 2. But whenever i try to install, it just says that it fails. I have been trying to download and install for about 5 days. If i download just the service pack 2 or 3 file from another website, i get an error.

Here is the error when downloading from microsoft:

Thanks

You should slipstream SP2 into a new XP install Cd. You can use a program called Autostreamer to slipstream it and then use a burner program such as nero or roxio or the something similar to burn the new image to cd.

I would prefer to just install a service pack more than reinstalling windows. When i try to install service pack 2 or 3 by a downloaded file, i receive this error after extracting:

Thanks

But the point is, as in your case, when you try to install SP2 or SP 3 as update, you will come across problems such as this. If you slipstream SP2 or SP3 into a new XP install cd then you can just reinstall XP with the SP already installed and won't have to update. Its just some computers don't like service pack updates, a clean install is always best.

I tried using Windows Update Repair tool but it did not fix the problem.

I might try the slipstream, but it just seems complicated. Does it just update my computer or reformat?

Thanks for the suggestions

I tried reinstalling windows with a disc made with nlite, but after the blue screen when reformatting, i received an error. It said that ntfs.sys could not be found. My computer wasn't able to boot so i just installed windows with my normal xp disc and it worked fine. I now have service pack 3 installed! Thanks for the help.:)
