set up

Harddrive is ATA-100. That's a slower standard compared to the SATA-150 which is more commonly used, but it'll do just fine...

Usally, you don't need thermal compound. Most retail CPU's come with a bit. Only if you want to step above the usual or overclock...

At least get a DVD-ROM if anything. Many games and programs come on DVDs, and it won't be much more expensive.

I like the motherboard and the processor...

Power supply looks good, but you could do better... I'd look for something with 30+amps on the 12v rail, even if it's less watts.

GPU seems good...

RAM, DEFINETLLY get a duel channel kit(512x2) Having only one stick will really harm your performace.

As for the case, I was going to mention, I have one I'm trying to sell. Black, temp, fan control, two 120mm fans, window. It's a Thermaltake sviking. I didn't look if tigerdirect had them, but I got it originally from Newegg. Just shoot me a message if your interested...

you don't need a dvd drive but it comes in handy because some games come with extra features on the dvd part of the disk, but NO you do not need a dvd drive
EDIT: AWWW BEAT me to it other.

yes you need a dvd rom. if you dont you cannot play any DVDs or any games that are burned on dvd media which is basicly anything made after 2004.
