setting changes by itself

i have this annoying problem recently; my connection setting changes to "never dial a connection" from "always dial my default connection" by itself at time. I am using a dial up connection, so when i click on IE icon, it should open window to prompt me for password to connect, but instead show no connection. So i have to open tool/internet options/connections and check the "always dial my default connection"
May i know why it behave this way? could it be malware or what? thanks in advance.

Have you tried running any antivirus or antispyware utilities to see if you have some type of malware or browser hiujacker on your system? There are quite freewares and sharewares as well as some special removers for various types of annoyances.

This can happen for a couple of reasons. Either you have Norton Antivirus set to auto protect or you have a program that is changing it on you, which could be spyware. Some companies require specific settings, and they will change them back automatically.

External companies may require certain configurations. But unless someone has "remote access" you have to manually make any changes with settings directly. If the system is networked with remote access enabled or some malware enabled it that could explain why the changes are being seen.

IBM computers do it automatically.. You want proof?

I gave all three reasons that are known to change that setting... If you need a link, I'll give you one. Otherwise.....

really appreciate you guys for replying. i dun have norton n i have ada-ware and AVg which are updated and scan often.but this problem will return even i set it back to normal

There's a number of things that can still get past AVG and AdAware. Besides Ewido found at http://free.grisoft.com/doc/ewido-anti-spyware-free/lng/us/tpl/v5 there are several other small programs for finding spywares and malwares.

If you have a free to use dialup with a time limit like Netzero you will find that often a little bot gets in there usually to disable the *70 call waiting. Sometimes those will cause problems or your configuration is the problem. IE is simply going back to the default settings. The one thing that you could try is downloading the IE setup and then remove IE through the add/remove programs. Windows components to see it gone completely. Then perform a totally new setup. The fresh install of IE would disable the effects seen by any malware with the new registry entries.

Hi PC Eye, are you suggesting that i uninstall IE 6 and re install it? Is it the IE6 SP 1? I am using WinXP pro service pack 2, pentium 4. Thanks

I'm currently running XP Home with SP2 and had replaced IE with the IE 6 SP1 setup.exe download direct from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...cb-5e5d-48f5-b02b-20b602228de6&DisplayLang=en

The removal and fresh replacement would break any links between IE and the cause unless something had corrupted the IE Files themselves. This would give you a fresh start there with a clean install. You would have to use the setup wizard to get it confgured all over again. If you have any favorites and links to save just copy them out of the "C:\DocumentsandSettings\user name\" by right clicking on the favorites folder which contains the links sub folder and paste it into a second folder seen in a second explorer window.
