Setting Default Media Player

How do i set a default media player? I downloaded VideoLAN and it took over my WMP icons, how do I set it back to WMP?

Thanks

Reinstalling WMP will take care of that fast enough. That doesn't take long at all. Don't you love what some crap program does? Go into the control panel after you download a fresh copy and save it to a folder and uncheck the WMP item in the add/remove Windows components section of the add/remove. Once gone simply install the new copy to create fresh registry entries. You may need to resave playlists depending on the version of WMP.

For the other player go into the Start>Programs menu and find the other player's icon and create a shortcut for the desktop. Simply drag the copy onto the desktop for running that one. You should be set to go.

Apparently the VideoLAN program meshes into WMP to see it overriden by the new registry values as well. Simply trying to change shortcut settings wouldn't return things to their original defaults. It is a shame that it clashed with WMP however. The description on the new name it has "VLC media player" shows it is a cross platform type of program.

"VLC media player is a free software (GPL) media player by the VideoLAN project.
It is a highly portable multimedia player, encoder, and streamer supporting many audio and video codecs and file formats as well as DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. It is able to stream over networks and to transcode multimedia files and save them into various different formats. VLC used to stand for "VideoLan Client", but that meaning is deprecated[1].
It is one of the most platform-independent players available, with versions for Linux, Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, BeOS, BSD, Windows CE, and Solaris, and is widely used with almost 30 million downloads for version 0.8.5.[2]
VLC uses a large number of free/open source decoding and encoding libraries. Many of its codecs are provided by the libavcodec codec library from the FFmpeg project, but it uses its own muxer and demuxers. It also gained distinction as the first player to support playback of encrypted DVDs on Linux by using the libdvdcss DVD decryption library.
Version 0.8.6, which adds support for WMV version 9 and enhances support for H.264, was released on 10 December 2006[3]." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VLC_media_player

No problem........I just went into Add/Remove Programs and to Program Access, I went into the Custom setup and changed it from current to WMP.

Thanks

That's good there! Not having used that program to see just what it does in the registry and what options for setting defaults does make it a little awkward. With some players that won't always be the case however. I didn't know if the following description on XP with SP1 would work there.

To use the Set Program Access and Defaults feature to change the default programs that you use for certain activities, follow these steps: 1.Click Start, point to All Programs, and then click Set Program Access and Defaults. 2.Use one of the following methods to perform the appropriate task: •To restore your settings to the settings that were established by the manufacturer of your computer, click Computer Manufacturer. This option is available only if the computer manufacturer installed Windows XP SP1 on your computer and established settings for this feature.•To use programs that are included in Microsoft Windows as the defaults for the activities that are listed earlier in this article, such as surfing the Internet, click Microsoft Windows. You can use this configuration to access Microsoft programs or non-Microsoft programs on your computer, on the Start menu, on the desktop, and from other locations.•To use non-Microsoft programs that are installed on your computer as the defaults, click Non-Microsoft, and then select the options that you want. This configuration removes access to the specified Windows programs.•To use a combination of non-Microsoft and Microsoft Windows programs for the activities that are listed earlier in this article, click Custom, and then select the options that you want. By setting up a custom configuration, you can select the programs that are set as the default for each activity, and the programs that are available on the Start menu, on the desktop, and in other locations. If you do not want the specified program to appear on the Start menu, on the desktop, or in other locations where programs typically appear, clear the Enable access to this program check box that is next to a particular program name. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/332003/
