Setting up a home server?

I have a lil older IBM Server. Dual 1.0 ghz processors, 1 gig of ram, 3-37 gig raptor drives. I'm fairly knowlegable when it comes to computers and want to set this up. I'm mostly going to be setting it up for FTP'ing. Not sure about possibly hosting a website or 2 . Anyone have advice, something you've learned along the way, do's or don'ts? Not sure if i'm going to just run WIN XP PRO or put Windows 2003 server. I've had the server for about 6 months and decided its do or die time with it. So my plan is to sit down and get started on it tonite.

Unless you already have the OS's, get XP. Windows 2003 Server is much more expensive, even the standard version.

Are you looking for people to access the site outside of your home? Are you using a standard home DSL/cable modem?

Yes I would like to set up a website maybe two and have access from the internet outside my home. I am using a cable modem. I will probably end up using XP but would'nt linux or even server2003 be more secure? What one of these three would be the easiest to set up and maintain?

if you use comcast, cablevision, or any of the other major ISPs, they block your ability to host websites. Some even block FTP servers. I got a nice letter from Comcast with the part of my contract highlighted that says im not allowed to host servers.

anyway, use windows XP. If you have to ask, that means you dont know enough about linux or windows 2003 to be successful with them. Windows XP is solid, and has plenty of features for what you want to do. Just check with your ISP to make sure it is allowed
