Hi there, i hope im speaking to people that own their own webservers here and are hosting other peoples sites.

Im interesting in starting my own hosting company, i was hoping that the computer forum community could share their experiances and common pitfalls they know about doing this.

Finding people that wan't to host on my server shouldnt be a problem, i just want to know a little bit more before i invest in a server.

Thanks in advance.

If you are serious about it and want to make money this is what you will need

1) Decent router, costs approx $1500

2) Whole lease of fiber from a giant ISP, monthly cost $5,000 to $10,000 depending on connections and such and how much bandwidth and what not

3) Clustered servers to host the websites, approx $2,000 each

4) Back up or RAID array for mass storage and disk splices approx $5,000 to start can scale up to $80,000 real quick depends on your needs

5) Gigabit or better switches, probably run your servers off a fibre channel into a gig switch, each switch will cost you $1000

6) Additional off site back ups, third party solutions no idea on costs but you will need to protect your client's data

7) Staff to answer questions and support users

8) Admin that knows how to run DNS, DHCP, Directory Services, etc

Starting your own web hosting company is not that hard if you know what you are doing and have money to start up. Then again, I don't think there is much of a market for that and I just recommend everyone go here

www.phpwebhosting.com

That is where I host my site, 9 bucks a month for unlimited everything and I have full access to my account. No way you can compete with things like that when trying to build a webhosting company from the ground up. You can only charge those rates once you are established.

OR.......

Install Apache web server on your PC and enable port forwarding on your Router - Total cost = $|£ 0

Encryptor
Linux rocks the planet...

LOL, what you going to offer your customers then? He said he wanted to start his own webhosting business, not host a webpage from his house. Which is still not advisable since limited bandwidth can't handle more than a few users.

Haha, we should just let Encryptor try it out and see how well it works out for him.
