setting up LAN connection problems - LG laptop

I have reinstalled windows XP on my LG LS50a, but i cannot get the internet to work. The computer recognizes my Network card (3Com 3C920 Integrated Fast Ethernet Controller), but the laptop never detects that the cable is plugged in. The cable does work (im connected with it now on my other computer:P), but i really am not sure what is going on here. I have my TCP/IP settings to detect automatically..

any thoughts? many thanks!

whats the other end of the cable going into?
Check device manager for any errors on the nic.
try giving it a static address to test.

Thanks for the advice. Device manager checks out, no yellow exclamations - the other end of the cable is going to a router that is going to a modem. i have a dynamic IP. With every other computer i plug into the cable it works.

I am thinking that even though i have a driver from my network adapter, it might not be working for some reason? Or would that problem show in device manager? Is there another driver i might be overlooking? This LG laptop of mine was in working order just yesterday before i whiped it.. well i guess not that good of working order considering it had a nasty virus:P

You could try downloading the latest driver from LG's website

you could possibly have a bad nic, maybe it just has a bad pin in it or something.

did you try putting a static address in there?

also try running ipconfig /all from the command prompt

if it doesnt recognize that command you might have a promblem with your stack, reinstalling your current service pack might fix that.
