Setting up Verizon DSL without their garbage

I setup my computer without Verizon's Yahoo experience, security, and other crap. I want to setup my Dad's comp and I can't remember how I did it with mine. Is there anyone out there that can help me out? it's a PPPoe.

Thanks

When I did it, all I did was connect the Westell modem and fired up IE. Instead of going to my homepage, it automatically went to the Verizon site to download some software and then automatically finished the installation. I never had to put the CD they supplied in the CD-ROM.

Are you on the newer wireless or 2Wire as it is called. With the older dsl you simply ran the Home Portal software for the host on a nik card or dialup model there and thje rest use a 2Wire usb adapter. For that all you needed was the basic drivers seen in the DM as a network adapter.

No not wireless and not 2Wire. I have the stupid software that takes over your computer and it's not USB. It is a straight-up modem PPPoe connection.

if you have a router, you don't even need to install anything on the PCs

i've got verizon and the only thing i did was set up my router to log in (put in the username and password, then selected PPPoe) and then just set up the PCs to connect threw a local network:

open ie -> Tools Menu -> Internet Options -> Connections Tab -> Setup
select 'i want to set up my internet connection manually or i connect threw a local area network' at the bottem, hit Next
select 'I connect threw a local area network', hit Next
select 'Automatic Discovery of Proxy Server' if you want, it doesn't really matter. hit Next
choose wether or not you want to setup outlook express, hit Next.
then hit Finish

The host pc on a Home Portal setup uses a modem instead of nik card at this time to allow other cases to bypass the host and connect directly. At one the host had to be contuinoiusly running while now it connects with the dialup type. One the modem part is configured there's no need for all the rest here. The secondaries simply have a network adapter added to the items in the device manager. Would you believe the same 98 drivers work on Vista?

Do you have all of that garbage that they give you? I forget how I did it on my computer.

If you mean the Verizon Servicepoint stuff, I disabled it in msconfig so it won't start up when booting. It's on the hard drive, but I never bothered to uninstall it.

I agree there. Once you have all of the basics covered you can pick and choose the stuff you don't want and disable it. I was wondering how good Servicepoint was compared to 2Wire anyways. I was told their service techs were having real fun when that was first being installed.

I didn't even have to set it up, it was online after I put the LAN drivers on. Wierd, eh?? Yeah, the Service Point, it is kinda screwy. On both my current PC's and Service Point installed, the onboard LAN doesn't work, but without it, the onboard LAN works.

Have you been able to configure Outlook Express as well as get online? The problems heard on the newer dsl setups was mainly for the stuff that replaced the older 2Wire mostly the wireless from what I was told.

From what I've been hearing lately your OE or Thunderbird will see a list of spam if used while being on Verizon. It used to be Netzero and others that typically saw this. I use a few online free accounts over putting up with that problem. Removing those from the list keeps it basic anyways.
