shaky problems

Hi everyone, my first post.

I have some problems with my graphics card

The whole thing started about a year ago when my fan got stuck for about a week (was dirty). THe chip was overheating and the voltage would fall below 2.9 V, and the image would shake on 3D displays.
Then if figured out what was the problem, so I cleaned the fan, and it was working ok...

Then later on (a month or so ago), as the fan got dirty again, it got slow so the problem with 3d images started again, I went to clean the fan again but I accidentally broke the axle, and the card was few days without cooling before I bouth a new fan.

The new fan is NOT original fan for radeon cards (Nobody in the town had replacement radeon fans) so I used a Gforce fan (used the old holding metal plate and attached it somehow)

The new fan works at full speed, but the problem continues.

Here is a detailed description of what happens:

when I turn on the computer it's ok, and the computer can be on for the whole day without any problems unless I enter a 3d game.

When I enter the game, for about 10 minutes it is ok, then the image starts to shake (in waves) and polygons start flying all over the place. In extreme cases the image blacks out for a second or two.
After about 5 minutes of this chaos, the whole thing goes back to normal, and continues to be ok for the rest of the game play (it doesn't return)

I will buy a new card next month, but I was wondering if there is anything I can do till then to fix this problem?

And why does it go back to normal after about 5 minutes? If the heat causes problems, how come the problems dissapear after a few minutes?

Your video card is probably semi-fried since it overheated many times. The best solution is to buy a new one, which you said you are going to.

don't know till I get to stores, and see the prices.

My old one was ati radeon 9000 with 128Mb. I'm going to get something in a bit higher price range than that one used to cost back then.

By the way, you know what's funny? My old card stoped shaking and hadn't been causing problems for a few days now, even after hours of playing 3d games.

I've returned home now with a new card, bough 512Mb memory too (now I have 768)

The card is Sapphire Radeon 9600XT with 256Mb DDR AGP (for my older motherboard). It's a cheaper card, but it is about 150% more expensive than I payed my last one, and it is a few generations newer so I think I'll see some improvement.

Nice, that is a good card for the price. Let us know how it works with you system!! :)

It certainly is an improvement. In some situations where FPS is dependant only on graphics there is up to 15 FPS improvement, but that might be mixed with the fact that I got more memory too.

But I mostly play MSTS these days, and that game is CPU heavy, so the difference is not that big.
