Share your HP Laptop Experience

I started another thread about how I went through 2 BRAND NEW TOSHIBA M205's in 2 weeks, so needless to say I am through with Toshiba laptops forever. When I first was looking for a new computer it was between the Toshiba M205 and the HP DV6701. I clearly picked the wrong one. My 4 year old Dell Inspiron 600m runs better than my brand new Toshiba. If you have any experience with this or other HP laptops, good or bad, please share them here.

Also, many of the HP laptops come with an AMD Turion 64. I have always been under the impression that these are inferior to Intel processors, true or false?

I am a student and use my computer for things a law student would, research, internet, email, and itunes.

perhaps it was a bad line sent to the same store but the toshiba u series laptop i bought for my sister still has no problems

I thought that too, but they were from different stores in different cities about 200 miles away.

I love HP laptops and have become brand loyal to them. Currently I own a dv6000 and a dv9000, the 9000 is my favorite and I use it every day. It has a 17" widescreen, 2.0GHz Turion, 2 gigs of memory, built in 54mps wireless connector, webcam, and a number pad...very useful for office use. It was $850. I was a little worried about the CPU combined with Vista at first but I found that it was able to run vista with no hiccups except a slow start up. I suggest the 17" screen not only for the size but also because it has a clip to connect the "clamshell" closed and it has a number pad...both of these features are absent on the 15.4" models. I only have two complaints about the 17" HP: first the touchpad and keyboard are off-centered to the left to accommodate the number pad, and two, the battery life is nothin'. However I love the screen, they are built very solid, I have never had any reliability issues with them, and I find them visually appealing. The speakers suck but hey.

You are correct that the Turion is generally inferior to the Intel counterpart. However it has been my experience that even the 2.0GHz version of the Turion is acceptable to run Vista and most work/school/general type tasks. If you go on hp.com you can custom order laptops with Intel chips or faster Turions, graphics cards if you're into gaming or graphic editing, and better batteries with extra cells. They do take a few weeks to ship though.

Just one more thing if you do decide to go with an HP, don't install Windows XP on it. It will remove the video and sound drivers in the process and HP doesn't offer a way to attain those drivers back. Good luck with your decision.

If you do go HP, buy their business class, its only a few more bucks or the same price and a way better machine. Plus they don't come prebloated with all that crappy software HP tosses on there.

I have a 12" HP nc4200 and it is a nice little laptop, never had any major troubles except when I loaded some Linux distros on it, but that was lack of driver support not the laptops fault.

HPs are sturdier than Dells, HP knows their PCs and in general, AMD processors are better buys because they have just as much (or more) features than comparable Intel. With intel, you're just paying for the name. After giving away my 5yr old Intel P4 gateway, I can say I have never owned an Intel. Nothing against Intel, I've just always been an AMD person.

Havent owned an hp laptop but I have an hp desktop and I love it!! Very fast pc and havent had any problems with it. Hp uses acceptional hardware. The only problem i had is the bios but an update fixed that. Hp kinda junks up their pc's with crap software but its not as bad as say DELL. I love my hp and plan on sticking with them for a while and I recommended to my mom to buy one also.

google hp coupon codes before you buy. Many times you can find 20-40% off coupons. I bought a dv6500t and ended up getting like $400 off becuase of a deal they were running on customized laptops.

for example:
$500-off web-only coupon for the purchase of a customized HP Pavilion Notebook PC configured at $1399 or greater at the HP Home & Home Office Store. Coupon code: NB1567
