sharing internet through a broadband modem

Hello everybody!
I am facing a problem of networking now since I have not much knowledge about it.
I have two computers. A desktop is running with Windows7 ultimate and a Laptop is running with XP SP3.
I have a broadband connection and the modem has four LAN ports. having the same os in two machines I have become able to share files between them using the modem. But I could not connect the two having different os.
Again, I cannot share the internet on two machines, say I can connect the two machines through the Broadband modem but cannot access the Internet on two at the same time.

please let me know and help me out

If your modem has 4 lan ports then its also a router. What is the make and model number of your modem? If its provided by your internet company, call them and tell them you can't share internet, it could be broke or a setting has been changed.
