hi everyone,

i'm from the UK and my internet provider is AOL. i hav the silver package which means that my internet connection speed is 512 k/b secs. i hav 2 computers and now i want 2 share my broadband connection. however my isp claim that i can't share my internet connection because it's too slow. therefore i would like 2 kno if this is tru? also, i don't kno if this is useful but my broadband modem is a BT Voyager 105... thnks 4 your help!

Umm..., yeah AOL just wants you to upgrade your connection... If you get a router, then you should be able to hook up both computers through the network that is created by the router, and then you're done :). Just make sure that both computers have an ethernet card and that your modem also has an ethernet out to connect to the router. If you want to go wireless, that's also another option, but the bottom line is that AOL just wants you to upgrade your connection so that they can make more money off of you. The additional computer will slow down your connection overall, but it won't make it impossible by any means...

you CAN share it, AOL just wants to make more money and have you upgrade. Now if someone is downloading on 1 comp, the other comp isnt going to be lighting fast, bur if your broswing the web, it will be fine. I shared my old 256KBps DSL connection between 2 comps.

Heres what you do, you get a router (wired or wireless), plug an ethernet cord from your modem into the WAN port on your router, then buy a wireless or wired network card. And get a cable and hook it up from your router to your computer port. (you might have to do a little configuration in the router, but it should tell you how in the manual).

Hope that helped.

Thanks for your help, v.helpful but i think my main problem is that my modem doesn't hav an ethernet out. it only has an usb slot and dsl slot. so does that mean i can't share my internet connection and if that is the case r there anyways around it?

cheers

you might be able to hook up your other computer via a crossover cable, then enable "Internet Connection Sharing" I dont know how to set it up exactly, but im sure someone else does.

You can share it, AOL just wants to make money.

Sharing it would mean it would be slower though, and its not thast fast in the first place.

I woyuld recomend gettign a differnet provider...

just 2 confirm things, so to use a router to share my internet connection i NEED an ethernet out on my broadband modem? correct?
