just wondering but i just purchased a dvd writer for archival purposes, got tired of my computer saying that i was low on whatnots. anyway i was wondering if i were to burn files onto a dvd-r or dvd+r how long do they usually last? does brand or weather its +r or -r have any factor whatsoever? any info appricated

It's really just an industry guess at the moment, since DVD's haven't been around long enough for one to break down. The estimate for DVD's (both sorts) is between 70 and 100 years, due to the high-quality coating. CD-R's are a lot less, the estimate is 10 years.

Really, I don't think it it's shelf like you need to worry about as much as wear. Handling them and I hear the laser wears the coating out(I don't know how true this is)
