Shopping for a laptop anytime in the next year

Can you give me advice on shopping for a laptop when I have the time to wait for a deal to come along?

I can literally wait 1-2 years but would like to pull the trigger sometime in there.

I am looking for:
Namebrand like Dell, HP, Gateway, Alienware, etc
4 GB ram upgradeable to 6, or 6 GB ram. I would prefer 6 upgradeable to 8 if possible.
nice dual core processor
Windows

Would my best bet be to keep lurking the manufacturer sites until a deal too good to be true comes along? What about retailers like Sam's Club; I have heard from time to time they have a deal too good to be true.

PS I have not bought a computer in several years so I am out of the loop on specs and prices.

What is your price range? In my opinion the best store for prices that I have found is best buy. I shopped around for like 6 months and they had great deals. The laptop in my sig I got for 999$ from there with a 2 yr warrenty with dell about 4 months ago.

Anywhere from $500 to $1000 I would like to pay. One of the keys for me is I want it to be a deal almost too good to be true. It sounds egotistical but its much easier for me to justify such a purchase if I know I got the best for the buck. I have had several desktops and never a laptop. I know I would use a laptop and enjoy it.. but its like I've been fine this far without one. So I have to find ways to justify it to myself.

What is it you exactly do with your computers? And buying them in store does seem much cheaper then buying directly from the manufcture.

On a typical day I will have 3-4 web browsers open and a download program running. Maybe a word file open.

I outgrew playing video games.. but have always enjoyed first person shooters going back to doom / doom 2. I think I'd probably like to get back to playing one. The latest of a marquee series of some sort (doom, halo, aliens versus predator, etc)

How's the Dell Studio 15 working out for you? I was considering getting that with the i7-720QM processor, but I'm still deciding.

Pretty awsome computer, at anytime I have three to four tabs open on my browser at a time. Along with music playing and doing a video chat with my wife when I am gone. I have not been able to give my computer to many task and there has been times when I have my computer running six programs at once. I have been impressed with the i5. Not the best computer for gamming but I don't really game.

punkmartyr, Honestly any laptop will be good for you. Even one with a intel i3 cpu. My only concern would have been if you did do any crazy amount of gaming. But for what you want any laptop over the price of 600$ would work with you. I would still recomend a Dell any of the studio series. They are all they way around well packaged and the quality of the casing makes them look better then any apple computer.
