shopping for new memory for my laptop

I have realized recently that I really need to look into upgrading the memory of my laptop I am planning up grading both my hard drive memory as RAM or just whatever two I need to be looking into. I am not really as computer savvy as I would like to be so if I don't use the right terminology I apologize.
But I am just wondering what all I need to look into, I thought i heard someone say its a good idea to match up your memory to what you laptop can handle or what type is already there, so i am thinking of bringing in my laptop having it be looked at by people at Best Buy and having them tell me what I should be looking at for memory types.
I know I could do this myself but I have never opened up a computer all by myself once, and I am not so sure how well I feel about opening it up all by myself, so I figure taking it in and having some tell me what I should be looking for is probably a better option for me.
But if you all have any other general info that can be helpful for me that would be great. Hopefully at least I have a general idea of what I need to be doing.

You don't need to open the laptop to know what kind of RAM it takes. You can use CPU-Z to find out what RAM you have now and match that. Obviously you'll have to open it to put the new RAM in though. It's fairly easy to do, in the middle on the bottom side of the laptop you'll see a panel attached with screws, you take those out and the panel will come off. You'll the the RAM slots/already installed RAM there. Then you just need to match the notch in the slot to the notch in the RAM and put the RAM in. There should be video guides on Youtube if you want to see the process.

Yeah i think when my friend was telling me about upping the memory and having to open it to find out I think he was referring to HD memory not RAM lol and I being the complete duntz I am only thought there was one type of memory to look at getting...um just a quick question if I can
Just how much HD and RAM memory can you put on a laptop computer, cuz if I can I would like to max it out to as much as it possibly can hold, so i can have it running at its peak for as long as possible.

Thanks Bengal i will make sure to check out the sites ASAP!
