Should be a simple question.

Hi. I'm probably going to buy this:

CPU: Intel® Core 2 Duo 3.0Ghz E8400 CPU w/Fan
Motherboard: ASUS P5N73-AM GeForce 7050/610i, PCI-Ex, 2 PCI
Memory: 4GB DDR2 PC6400 800Mhz Memory
Video Card: 256MB GeForce 7050 Graphics Controller (onboard)
Hard Drive: 500GB 7200RPM Ultra Fast Serial ATA300 Hard Drive

It will be used mostly for gaming, so clearly I'll need a new GPU. Having Crysis on very high isn't really a priority, although I'd love to play every other game with those settings. Staying under $700 is my top priority, and the setup I listed is currently at $477.

Since it's already equipped with a 7050, I won't need a freakin' GTX 280. Wouldn't a simple 9800gt do the job? For instance, here's the 512MB 9800gt on GTA4:

And that dude has 2 less gigs of RAM than me. I suppose my question is, what's the cheapest GPU on the market that will do fine in my CPU? Thanks.

that 9800GT will be prefect for your needs, i can run crysis at very high on my 8800GT so a 9800GT will max 99% of games.

Hope that helps

firstly i think you should consider buying this

cpu: INTEL CORE 2 QUAD CORE Q8200 2.33 GHZ,
you will have two more cores, and as for the clock, it can be overclocked easily. the price i think is more or less the same, at least here it is +- 10euros

and also this
motherboard : MSI P6NG NEO-L
that will give you more pci slots.
with the other motherboard, the graphics card will leave only one free pci which will be useless because using it, the devise you will plug will be attached to the fan of the graphics card """it's going to blow"""" (that happened to me:()

well as for the graphics card, a 9800gt is good but also check 4850(check it out on charts, and also read reviews).. look for 1gb of ram..

That's great news!

You run Crysis at 'Very High' with an 8800? I somehow find that hard to believe. :P That includes your stock GPU though, right? Would you recommend me getting the 512MB or 1GB? Also, I think I might need to get a new mobo, so do you have any recommendations for a decent-priced one that will support these games? Thanks!

I always thought that Quad Core CPU's were a waste of money. :o I won't be multitasking, so it seems that they won't use up all four cores.

I am going to compare and contrast the P6NG you've listed with the PN5 Pro's and whatever else in the price range. Thanks. :D

I'm going to pick the cheapest GPU in this performance range, so I'm definitely going to be shopping for the 4850. Do ya' think the 1GB (on top of the stock 256MB onboard) will really be necessary? Thanks for your input!

your welcome...
well about the cpu their difference in money i think is minor. also i have a friend that needed to overclock his core 2 duo for gta4. i would get that quad core but it's your choice (i have core i7 920 and believe me it's out of the competition)

well as for the memory i think it's important but if you want to spend less money a 512 will be fine..

What do you think about these:

k9a2
p7ngm

I'm not sure I understand exactly about the PCI slots and whatnot. How many will be necessary? What's the difference between 2.0 & x1??? Could someone please explain? Thanks!

The first one is cheaper and has a 2.0 slot. And waaayy better reviews lol. I would go with the 4850. It's comparable to the 9800GTX+, and the prices have come way down since the release of the new cards.
