I have a hp pavilion dv5130us. It has 1gig of ram, and an AMD Turion 64, mobile technology processor(single core). Is there any real point to spending the money to upgrade to 2 gigs of ram? i have heard mixed reviews since i have a single core processor.....what do you think?
Thanks,
AJ

I think I wouldn't spend another nickel on that thing. I would dump it and use the money to buy an Intel based laptop with the specifications you require.

Depends on what you do on your laptop. Do you game? Do you multitask? If all you do is the internet and listen to music then no you don't need 2 gigs. 1 gig should be plenty for that.

i guess what i would like answered more then anything is, what does effect would running 2 gigs of ram have on a single core cpu? would the cpu not be able to use the 2 gigs to its full potential?

It would be able to use if you run programs that need that much memory or if you run a lot of programs (so that combined they use that much memory) .

Yeah, single core/dual core... Doesn't matter. They both can address that much RAM. It's possible that what your friend meant is that with a single core processor it can't do that much at the same time anyways, so even if you did add the RAM, it wouldn't have a huge effect on performance.

I suppose that would be true to a very small degree, but even still, the biggest thing is that the computer won't have to be constantly running back to the harddrive every time you wanted to access another program. For that reason, extra memory will have an impact, especially with the likes of Photoshop.

Still, I wouldn't invest in that machine. You'd still be able to sell it for good money and then take what you would have spent on extra RAM and get a more capable machine.

I just got back from servicing a brand new laptop with an AMD X2 processor in it. What a dog. You could get out and walk faster. My Centrino Duos blow it out of the water, no contest.

Yeah, I'd get rid of it.
