Ok so friend has what I'm pretty sure is a Sony Vaio PCGK64 laptop, i think this is the one http://www.ecplaza.net/tradeleads/seller/4172218/sony_vaio_laptop_pcgk64.html

anyway he's trying to get rid of it, probably aounrd $150AUD he's offering me as a firend to friend thing. I think he bought it refurbished as in like their was a slightly problem at manufacturing level and this company then redoes it so its basically brand new.. so yeah he bought it for like $2000 ish in 2005 or 2006, so getting it for $150 is pretty much a steal.

My question is, he was showing me the laptop today, all looked cool. Windows had the blue screen. where it starts the "beginning physical dump". my concern is... is this a laptop problem? Or the windows? Will like he said: reformatting it should fix it?

Cos if reformatting/reinstalling windows I have no problem... however if its a hardware problem(The blue screen) then i'd rather not waste my money :D

on another hand, how do i know if its wifi compatible? Its got usb so do i merely get a usb wifi dongle thing and internet should work? or does it need other features etc to be able to wifi since thats my main concern.

One other things can laptop be left on for quite awhile? so i could perhaps use it as a folding machine(for those who fold - http://folding.stanford.edu)

btw if anyone is good at digging up info on this laptop model I'd appreciate just some general comments. Eg: battery life, and specs. i know its not flash bang but where does celeron(i think its a celeron?) sit? do celerons come before centrino's and pentium m etc in terms of processing power? How about versus pentium 3/4 cpu's where exactly does the celeron cpu sit in the grand scale of things? :D

and yeah most importantly is whether wifi will work and the blue screen problem :( xp/software related, yes? :D

It most probably does have a wifi card built-in, most laptops from 2004 + beyond have them built in. The blue screen problem could be a software related issue, or some bad ram which you should replace regardless with 1-2 gigs. could be some other things but it's likely to be that.

Alright, anyone able to dig up the specific model to check for the wifi card? not too sure myself =(

Hmm icic, but laptop memory is quite exp compared to desktop memory(which i still cry over paying for old ddr even :D) but yeah if i perhaps borrow the comp and run memtest before i buy it i should be able to tell right? OR perhaps i could ask to reformat , try it if it doesnt blue screen/comp not screwed i take it?

anyway yeah still appreciate someone giving me some know-how on the processor type, i still hav eno idea where celeron and centrino's sit in the grand scale of processor types :S

the lappy looks okayish if all you plan to do light stuff like surf the web. 2.8ghz isnt bad for an older lappy. i think for the price its a bargan.

edit: i agree with jabes, no wifi :(
