I was planning to get a 24" lcd monitor but should i? Because i currently own a 8600 GTS which cannot run much games at high settings =(...

The size of the monitor doesen't make a difference, what you should be looking at is the ideal resolution. If your card isen't very good find a monitor thats ideal resolution is a fairly low number, it can be 24 inches and still have a very low ideal resolution.

My monitors ideal resolution seems to be 1680x1050 which is an extremely taxing resolution for gaming. I just run games under 800x600 or 1024x768, of course it doesen't look pretty but it doesen't seem to affect the FPS or anything when it stretches to fit my screen. So you can still upgrade your monitor and run games on any resolution you want without it affecting preformance i'm pretty sure.

I don't exactly know if it's called "Ideal resolution" i'm just going by personal experience. Wait for somebody else to post as well, i'm sure they know more than i do.

When he says ideal resolution he means native resolution. Most (all worth considering purchasing) 24" monitors run 1920x1200. This is about a 40% increase in graphics load over a 1280x1024 resolution.

You may consider purchasing a monitor that supports 1:1 formatting (like widescreen TV sets, when receiving a non-digital signal). In other words, you'd be able to game in whatever resolution you like, with the picture surrounded by black bars, and still be able to have your windows desktop all big and stuff. However, there'd be a decrease in quality at any resolution other than its native resolution no matter what you do.

You know, my widescreen seems to have 1:1 formatting, it has black lines on the side when i use a 16:10 resolution lower then 1680x1050. I definitly DON'T recommend getting one that support 1:1 formatting, if your anywhere near a gamer this is going to bug you alot. The black bars on the side make it hard to enjoy the game.
