Should I keep these HDD's?

Hi, I've gotten a hold of a computer that my work used to surveillance video. Anyways, this computer has several HDD's. I was wanting to keep some of them so that way I can increase my file servers storage.

The first HDD in question is a Seagate 400GB PATA, this one was working great, but all of a sudden, the reallocated sectors keep climbing on every boot, So you'll be running windows, do a restart, and there will be as many as 5-10 more reallocated sectors. I have no idea why its doing this, and the numbers will not climb if the computer is on, only when you reboot, or boot the system.(its currently up to 56 reallocated sectors, and about 38,000 POH)

The next on is a WD 500 GB PATA, All of the S.M.A.R.T. values are great, but it has around 40,000 hours on the POH value, Would this one even be worth keeping, or should i just scrap it? There are 2 more HDD's in it, but they aren't even worth dealing with.

Thanks -Jon

Run seatools for dos on the seagate drive and it most likely will tell you its failing. I would trust the western digital before the seagate.

Wow really???
Because...EVERY SINGLE WD HDD I had in my ENTIRE life died within 10 days lol. While NOT A SINGLE SEAGATE HDD never EVER died in my entire life. Some of them are even 14 years old and still work perfectly.
So how do you explain that lol?
Same thing happened to ALL people I know. They also had WD HDD and EACH ONE also died within a MONTH lol.Same thing happened in my office too lol...each WD HDD died within a month.
I take care of my HDDs very very vrey good so there is no reason for WD HDDs to die,but they DID EVERY SINGLE TIME LOL!
While Seagate never EVER died on me EVER lol!

So how do you explain this lol?Bad luck?
Because if it's bad luck then I had more then 140 bad lucks. The hell with WD HDDs.They are a little bit cheaper, but I will rather give 50 dollars more for the Seagate HDD knowing it will last for more then 10 years lol for the difference of the WD HDDs which last 10 - 30 days in my case hahaha! :D

WD and TOSHIBA HDDs are the worst to me.Each one of them died within a month lol.I still have a 15 years old Seagate HDD of 4 GB and STILL works perfectly.Seagate is the best if you ask me.

But of course the HDD's life span also depends on how you take care of your HDDs.

I read that MANY people say that Seagate is shit and that WD rules.I will never EVER understand that. Please someone enlight me lol :P

I've only had a seagate external drive, and it never failed on me. But I've also had about 4 WD drives and they've all worked perfectly and still do. And my brother's builds always have WD and haven't had one failed ever. So its pretty much luck, seems like.

And he's trusting the WD based on the fact that the seagate has bad sectors, compared to the WD, which is a lot older and used more often.

I'd say its worth it, free drive. But just don't put an OS on it or any important files/programs.

I am not supporting john or saying your wrong, But I have used Western Digital for every drive I have had a choice on and never had an issue before. But 90% of these were 2.5" WD Blacks, so that is not really a good overview of the company as a whole.

LoL are you sure? Because if every single WD died on me because of "bad luck" then I had more then 150 bad lucks xD
And since 150 is pretty big number,I wouldn't say that is a bad luck.I would say that WD HDDs SUCK!

And that is not happening just to me,but to EVERYONE I know lol.So does that mean we ALL have bad luck? I don't think so lol. What IS bad are WD HDDs lol.

Cheers everyone!

It IS the luck of the draw, seriously.

Some will say that WD drives blow because they had early failures. Others will say they last forever. For that person, it's true.

I personally like Seagates for their reliability... even though my C: drive is a 4 year old used WD 160GB SATA drive that's never given me the slightest bit of trouble.

In all seriousness, I've had WD, Maxtor, Seagate and Quantum (there's a blast from the past!) hard drives. NONE have ever failed. The parts that give me grief and die with disgusting regularity are power supplies!!

Oh, well, then I must have good luck then, if none of mine have died.

But really, if you deal with large volumes of hard drives like you must have done, then yeah, the percentage is larger. But many people on this forum use them and don't have problems.
