What would you do if you plan on gaming only? Because theres still a lots of game out there using only 2 cores.

How would the q9550(2.93ghz) perform in games that use only 2 cores compare to my e6850(3ghz).

Also how high can you OC a q9550 on factory cooling?

Well right now not many games take advantage of quad cores. More games will eventually start to take advantage of the more cores though. The yorkfields perform a little better than the conroe clock for clock, and the yorkfield(q9550) has quite a bit more cache. You most likely wont get that good of an oc on the stock cooler, but there are cheap coolers out there that would let you get to a respectable overclock(~4Ghz i would say, cooler i would recommend is S1283, one of the best coolers on the market and only about $30). So in short, if you plan on keeping this rig for awhile and dont plan on upgrading to nehalem in the near future then the q9550 would be a good upgrade.

Yes do it! The e8650 is considered an old 65nm dual core, while the q9550 is the newer 45nm tech and it's also a quad. It's faster, runs cooler, and OC much higher.

Alright thx a lot for the info. I hoped the q9550 would perform a lot better than the e6850 in dual-core games.

I tried to find some benchmark comparing the 2 but no luck.
