Should I sell my new laptop?

So just last month my parents bought me a new laptop as a graduation present, however I can't help feeling that it was the wrong choice. I really wanted a gaming PC, however since I'm going to college soon portability was an issue, ruling out a desktop for right now. So my parents decided it would be best to get me a "gaming laptop." Already though I feel it's the wrong choice for me.

First of all, even though I want a gaming computer, I'm already facing a host of issues with this "gaming laptop." I have an XPS L702X with Intel i7 2.40 GHz Processor, 8 GB of RAM, and a NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M video card. The first game I tried was the MMO Vindictus, and the game runs pretty good on my computer. Immediately though I noticed my laptop overheats like crazy. It constantly gets above 80 degrees Celsius and often goes up to 85 degrees. So then I tried Crysis 2 and the framerate was horrible, despite several websites telling me I far exceed the recommended specs. I then tried the MMO Blade and Soul (beta) and the same happened along with more overheating. So, I think I really need a desktop for gaming.

Of course there's still the portability issue. However, I think this would be remedied through a Notebook computer, which I could purchase for around $600-$700. This is where I would mostly like some opinion on. Should I sell my current laptop, purchase a Notebook computer, and save up for a desktop for gaming?

Laptop and notebook are the same thing. Laptops get hot really easy. A desktop pc would be better for gaming, better cooling, better graphics.

If you can afford it that seems like a good idea. You could get something with an a series apu from amd which gives medium processor porformance with good graphics performance for a good price, so you could play your games, just not go for highest settings possible.

Hm, not sure what I was thinking. I probably meant netbook? Anyway, yes that's my main idea behind why I would rather simply sell this laptop and save up for a desktop. Would it be more difficult to simply upgrade my laptop instead?

Cant upgrade higher than the i7, and if you can it will cost a lot for a slightly faster one. As far as upping the graphics, idk if that is swapable but if it is there arent any great gaming cards for lappies and if you can find one on ebay i doubt it'll be cheap.

Yeah, I went to this website to check out my specs compared to other computers and the higher ups concerning processors seem to be for Desktops only. And I think the graphics card is built into the motherboard so you can't swap it out without getting a whole other motherboard.
