Should I swap My 7970 for a 7970 Ghz?

This may come off as a strange or selfish idea, but hear me out:

I bought a 7970 HD from newegg around two weeks ago or so while it was on sale, having been unaware of the GHz edition. Since that time, the GHz edition has come down massively in price due to sales and rebates that are on one of the cards from a specific manufacturer.

I've had my normal 7970 for less than 30 days. It has not been overclocked, damaged, or even used extensively. Is the idea of returning the normal 7970 and purchasing a 7970 GHz in its place plausible? Is the idea morally unsound? Can it be done? Has anyone else done similar before? I've read that the GHz is much more powerful than the vanilla version, and I don't want my brand new setup to become obsolete more quickly than it has to.

I think a 7970 can just be flashed with 7970 GHz BIOS. But it's all up to you if you want to go through the trouble of returning it. It's not that much better.

I wouldn't flash it. You would probably still need to voltage adjust with the GHZ BIOS to have a stable card. If you want to have higher clocks, OC it yourself.

According to Guru3D there is nothing different from the stock 7970 to the 7970GHz edition except for the GPUs have been picked for better stability over the 1GHz mark. So it is likely that GHz edition cards will hit higher max OCs but both should OC just fine

EDIT: with a stock 7970 at 925MHz the extra jump of 75MHz is pretty easy. if you are interested in doing it yourself.

If you can return it at no cost to you then I don't see why not. I would bet that there are fees involved unless there is something wrong with it.

I would keep it. Since its opened and nothing wrong with it. Dont know how they would deal with it. The hassle, it would not be worth it.

Just keep what you've got and bump up your current clocks if you feel the need, but honestly that's not really necessary anyway. That card will destroy pretty much all games out now and the few MHz in clock speed won't change much of anything.
