Should I upgrade my CPU?

Ok so I have an opportunity to upgrade my system with a new CPU and Motherboard. I'd be going from AMD Athlon XP 2600+ to a Sempron 64 3000+. I can do this for about $100. Will it make much difference or should I just save my money? Thanks.

You're going to have to buy a new motherboard, right? In that case, I would recommend you just go ahead an buy an Athlon X2. Sure, they cost a bit more, but it will last a much longer time than the Sempron ;)

same here
now you can get an X2 for less than 170$
but you will gain much more performance.

coz it's not a big jump from your CPU to a sempron 3000+

Hmm unfortunatley I really don't have much to spend. $100 is about what I could do. Plus any motherboard I get has to have an AGP slot since my new video card is AGP (Geforce 7800).

Ok well if I won't see a big performance increase then I won't bother with the upgrade. I'll save up and try and get an X2.

I would not recommend upgrading just the processor, because you really wouldn't see a change. Save your money for a new system.
