Should it not be called this?

Hey, I have heard people call the whole computer the CPU. Is this incorrect, or is it right to call it a CPU? Thanks, Derek.

Technically, the CPU is the processor located attachted to a socket on the motherboard, so no, it isn't correct. CPU stands for Central Processing Unit.

It is indeed wrong to call the whole computer a CPU, CPU stands for Central Processing Unit and consists of only the 2-inch square of metal in the center of the motherboard.

Edit: You bet me to it :P

Yeah, i know what a CPU is and what it stands for, I was just making sure it was improper to call the whole computer that. Thanks for the replies.

Its probably one of the idiots at best buy who thinks they know everything about computers, while they try and sell you an HP for 1500$.

i get a lot of people say that, its common in people who dont know jack about what they are talkijng about. I fix/service maybe on average 3 PC's every week... and usually 2 of them will THINK they know what the problem and has tried to fix it themselves but only made it worse etc... most of the refer to components in wrong terms, CPU being the base tower/desktop part of a PC a very common one.

Just out of interest, who was it who said this...?

Hey. So I was at work, and my boss donated this really old crappy PC, and it was having problems with the mouse. The port it was plugged in to actually fell into the computer, it was some crappy old design. So I opened it up and fixed it, and while I was doing it she went around telling the kids (its a daycare) that the tower itself was called the CPU. I was thinking, that's not right, but I didnt want to say anything until i was sure that it wasn't alright to call it this. Also, my dad has said it a few times. He's good with computers, I guess just not clear on the hardware.
Thanks for the replies.

Hehe, so many people get it wrong. I've heard the PC called a 'Hard Drive' and a 'Modem' many times (and then there are those people who think the monitor is the PC).

LOL, that's hilarious. I actually did used to think that the monitor was the computer, but that was back when I was like 6 or 7. That's weird it would be called a modem.

wasn't the term Personal Computer (PC) coined by like IBM way back in the day or something? So technically wouldn't that only refer to some computers?

Its very easy, and understandable why people would call it the CPU. Since alot of people believe the a "computer" consists of; a Monitor, Keyboard, Mouse, Printer, and CPU.
